Application Procedure to Study in Mauritius for International Students

Step 1:
Submit the filled-out application form along with the following documents:

  • 10th-grade mark sheet and certificate
  • 12th-grade mark sheet and certificate
  • Graduation mark sheets (for postgraduate applicants)
  • Graduation certificate (for postgraduate applicants)
  • Experience certificate (if any)
  • Scanned copy of the front and back of your passport

Primary Education
The education system in Mauritius follows the British model and has been a priority since independence. Primary education is free in public schools. Children start primary school at age 5, where they study for 6 years to earn a Certificate of Primary Education. Subjects include English, French, Geography, History, Mathematics, and Science.

Secondary Education
Secondary education in Mauritius also follows the British model. It lasts for 6 years. After the first 4 years, students take O-Level exams in at least 6 subjects. They can stay for an additional 2 years to prepare for A-Level exams, which are administered by the University of Cambridge.

Vocational Education
The Industrial Training Board, which is ISO9001-certified, offers training, consulting, and “train-the-trainer” services across Mauritius. Its goal is to improve the skills of the country’s workforce.

Tertiary Education
Mauritius has several tertiary institutions, including colleges for education and traditional studies. The country also has distance learning centers and polytechnics for higher education.

Visa Process for Indian Students to Study in Mauritius

  1. Submit a filled-in application form (hard copy).
  2. Provide four passport-sized photos (original; scanned copies are not accepted).
  3. Include a photocopy of the bio data pages of your passport.
  4. Provide a bank statement from your parents to prove you have enough funds (around MUR 100,000, which is approximately INR 2 lakhs).
  5. Submit the offer letter to the Passport Office, including course details.
  6. Include an accommodation letter.
  7. No locked funds or specific time period are required.
  8. No Income Tax Return (ITR) needs to be submitted.
  9. A medical certificate is not required at this initial stage, as the student will undergo medical screening in Mauritius. After that, the temporary student visa for 3 months can be extended until the completion of the course.

Visa Processing Time
The processing time is 4 weeks from the date of submission to the Passport and Immigration Office (PIO) in Mauritius. After visa approval, the student can book their tickets.

  1. Do I need to take an English language test to study in Mauritius?
    Students usually do not need to take the IELTS test if they have at least a Grade C at A-level or a very good result in English at O-level. Some institutions offer English placement tests for those who do not meet these requirements.

  2. Can I work during or after my studies?
    Yes, you are allowed to work for up to 20 hours per week while studying in Mauritius.
